Dangers of the Internet for Muslims

Al hamdu lillahi nahmaduhu wanasta’eenahu, wanastagh-firuhu, wanatoobu ilayhi, wana’oothu Billaahi min shuroori an-fusinaa, wamin sayyi aati a’maalinaa. May- Yahdillahu fa huwal muhtad, wa may- yudlill falan tajidaa lahu waliyan murshida. Wa ash-hadu an Laa ilaaha ill-Alláh, wahdahoo laa shareeka lah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhoo warasooluh

All Praise is due to Alláh, We praise Him and we seek help from Him. We ask forgiveness from Him. We repent to Him; and we seek refuge in Him from our own evils and our own bad deeds. Anyone who is guided by Alláh, he is indeed guided; and anyone who has been left astray, will find no one to guide him. I bear witness that there is no god but Alláh, the Only One without any partner; and I bear witness that Muhammad, sws, is His servant, and His messenger.

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem! Ya Ay-yuhal-latheenaaamanut taqul-laaha, haqqa tuqaatihee wala tamu tun-na, il-la wa antum Muslimoon.”

O You who believe, – Fear Allah, as He should be feared, and die not except as Muslims.

Ya Ay-yuhal-latheenaaamanut taqul-laaha, wa qooloo qawlan sadeedaa. Yuslih-lakum a’maalakum wa yaghfir lakum thunoobakum, wamay yu-til-laaha warasoolah, faqad faaza fawzan atheemaa.”

O You who believe, – Be aware of Allah, and speak a straightforward word. He will forgive your sins and repair your deeds. And whoever takes Allah and His Prophet as a guide, has already achieved a mighty victory.

In the opening verse of Sura An-Nisaa’, Allah says:

“O mankind! Show reverence towards your Guardian-Lord Who created you from a single person, created, of like nature, his mate and from the two of them scattered (like seeds) countless men and women; Be conscious of Allah, through Whom ye demand your mutual (rights) and (show reverence towards) the wombs (that bore you): for surely, Allah ever watches over you.

O you who believe, save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is

men and stones; over it are angels, stern and strong. They do not disobey Allah in that which He commands them, but do as they are commanded.

Brothers todays topic is the dangers of the internet, especially for the children.

But before I start I just want to declare that I’m not a man who has great knowledge in Islam, hence I feel shy and humbled when I see brothers in front of me listening to me, when I know they have more to offer than me with regards to our beautiful deen-ul Islam, but the matter I want to talk about a worldly issue created in the last 30 years, which has great impact on us as a community of Muslims living in a non-Muslim society.

I can only guess that like Khamar (alcoholic drinks) & Gambling were forbidden for us, today if our beloved prophet was amongst us, the Internet would have been banned for Muslims, because although it has good, the bad and evil that it possesses outweighs the good many fold.

I will also clarify and seek your understanding that as the topic is of a graphical nature some of the language I will use may ne be seen as befitting a masjid, but as there should be no shyness in matters of our deen I will try limit myself in every way possible.

What we hope to achieve today, understand the size of the problem and how to protect ourselves from it

Dangers on the internet to the Muslim ummah

Pornography (indecent vile images, videos), (2) Predatory (Paedophilia, sex grooming), (3) Cyber Bullying, (4) Social Media, (5) Identity theft/ Phishing and last but not least (6) Losing your Deen (Radicalisation, extremist cults, satanic cults)

The viewing of images or videos of sexual nature. “The portrayal of sexual acts solely for the purpose of sexual arousal. "Pornography is the portrayal of erotic behaviour designed to cause sexual excitement”

Every Friday we hear the Imam conclude his sermon by reciting the following verse of the Noble Quran:

InnaAllah Yamuru bil adel, wal ehsane, wa itae zil qurba; wa yanha anil fuhshae, wal munkari walbaghi; yaizukhum lallakum tazakkaroon. (Quran 16:90)

"Surely God enjoins justice, kindness and the doing of good, to kith and kin; and He forbids all that is shameful, indecent, evil, rebellious and oppressive." Pornography and the culture of pornography has all the three elements which God has prohibited in the above verse of the Quran: Fuhsha; Munkar, Baghi. Here is a bit of terminology before we review the rest of the evidence prohibiting pornography.

According to the Arabic-English dictionary, Fuhash is obscenity, vulgarity, indecency, shamelessness and something that is dirty, filthy and foul. The English-Arabic dictionary translates pornographic as Fahish. The Hans Wehr Dictionary Of Modern Written Arabic adds monstrosity, abomination, vile deed and fornication to its meaning as well.

Fuhsha, translated as anything shameful, is a Quranic term which in the Quran and Hadith has been used widely for unIslamic sexual behavior. The Quran uses it as in the above verse (Quran 16:90). It is a set of vices that embraces the whole range of evil and shameful deeds. Scholars of the Quran have included every vice which is intrinsically of a highly reprehensible character into this category whether it be fornication, nudity, public foreplay as depicted in films and photos, pornography, hurling abuses and curse words, promiscuous mixing, or dresses designed to expose the body. At the highest level of Fuhsha, Allah has included adultery (Quran 17:32) and same gender sex (Quran 7:80; 27:54).

All scholars agree pornography is included in the term Fuhsha.

English - Arabic Dictionary describes Munkar as gross, abominable, detestable, atrocious, outrageous, flagrant.

As a major Quranic term it means something which is universally acknowledged

as bad and immoral. This category includes all evils which have been unanimously condemned by the human conscience and which have been forbidden by Divine Law in all ages.

People of all faiths abhor pornography. Even the norms of British society do not allow its propagation in mainstream newspapers and prime time TV, forcing it to hide in dark alleys. Those who are addicted to pornography try to watch it mostly discreetly. This indicates that it is a universally accepted immoral act which Quran calls al-Munkar.

According to Al-Mawrid English - Arabic dictionary, this term means wrong, injustice, outrage, and transgression.

Al-Baghi in the Quranic terminology means transgression and trespassing into the space and the rights of others, whether those rights be of God or of a fellow human being. Pornography is a transgression towards God as well as towards human beings and animals. The pornographic industry trespasses on the rights of women especially by turning them into sex objects. Pornographic emails trespass the private email boxes of British users at least four times a day.

God is Against Pornography (Fuhsha) whether Open or Hidden

"Tell them (O Muhammad): 'My Lord has only forbidden indecent acts, whether overt or hidden?"(Quran 7:33).

Therefore, watching pornography or other indecent acts in the privacy of the home or on the internet is also forbidden.

Allah Asks Us Not to Even Go Close to It(Quran 6:151)

Mentioned here are the major sins

Allah has mentioned this instruction along with shirk and murder which means that Allah considered shameful things like pornography among the major sins.

Allah knows best. He knows His creation. He knows that we are weak. Therefore, He likes us to stay away from shameful things.

Those who Propagate Shameful things among the Believers

"Verily those who love that indecency should spread among the believers deserve a painful chastisement in the world and in the Hereafter. Allah knows, but you do not know." Quran 24:19

The words used in the verse (fahishatu) embrace all the various forms that might be used to spread shameful and lewd behaviour though any means be it pictures, films, or internet.

Don't follow Satan

At several places in the Quran, God warns us not to follow the steps of Satan: "He will incite you for shameful things (fuhsha) and encourage you to do universally accepted wrong things (al-munkar) Quran 24:21

Restrain Your Gaze & Guard Your Private Parts

"Enjoin believing men to restrain their gaze and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Surely Allah is well aware of all what they do.

And enjoin believing women to restrain their gaze and guard their private parts and additionally not to reveal their adornment except that which is revealed of

itself." Quran 24:30-31

Sayings of the Prophet: Hadith

No man or woman should look at the naked body of each other (unless married). Sahih Muslim

By God, I would prefer to be thrown from the skies and spatterred in parts than to look at someone's private parts or let someone look at my private parts. Narrated by Salman. Almabsooth kitabul istehsan.

Don't expose your thigh to anyone and don't look at the thigh of any person even if s/he is dead. Narrated Ali ibn abi Talib. Ibn e Maja, Abi Dawud, Darqutani. Tafseer Kabeer

Allah has written for Adam's son his share of adultery which he commits inevitably. The adultery of the eyes is the sight (to gaze at a forbidden thing), the adultery of the tongue is the talk, and the inner self wishes and desires and the private parts testify all this or deny it. Abu Hurairah. Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud.

Other Scholarly Perspectives

"If someone is looking at someone committing Zina (sex outside of marriage) whether it is in movies or pictures or the actual thing, it's all Haram,"

"Pornographic pictures and movies are haram (prohibited). Muslims should not watch, sell or make such movies. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is reported to have said: 'The eyes commit adultery, the tongue commits adultery, the hands commit adultery, the feet commit adultery and then the private parts confirm it or deny it." (Reported by Ahmad Ibn Hanbal)

"This means that watching pornographic movies, listening to such songs or singing them, using one's hands and feet for this purpose, all these are sins that are related to Zina and then the final act of Zina takes place through haram intercourse." Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi

Logging in and browsing pornographic sites is forbidden because a Muslim is always commanded to lower his/her gaze, let alone give a loose rein to his/her ? eyes to look at the private parts of others.

May Allah keep us all safe spiritually and physically.

This is an evil problem, wrongly or rightly I link problem as the root of all evil in the Muslim world today, we Muslims are addicted to this filth. Imagine 30 years

ago this wasn’t available, but now it’s readily available 24 hours and you carry the devices with you in the form of your mobile phones.

In my humble opinion the state of the Muslim ummah today and where we are today at such a lowly state is because of this evil in the society, many would say that the reason of our demise is not this but because of Shirk in the Muslim Ummah, I agree but watching porn is like a dark evil and takes out the emman from the person, hence any chances of being an abd are gone, you become a slave to the worst kind of slavery, the slave of haram sexual desires and action.

Let me share some data with you that will shock you but even then you won’t be surprised because in our hearts we know where we are as a muslim ummah:

Google released some disturbing data for the last year, they release the list of top eight countries in the world that search and use pornographic websites the most. Toping that list is Pakistan. Pakistan tops the list of most porn-searching countries and leads the way in porn searches on Google. It further revealed that six of the top eight porn-searching countries were Muslim states. The country at number two in the list was Egypt, while Iran number 4, Morocco number 5, Saudi Arabia 7thand Turkey 8th in the world. Brothers do you think we have a problem here.

Despite the fact that there is so much FREE Porn content on the web, this vile satanic industry is worth over £4,500 per sec. During the time that we have been in this Masjid today, the porn industry will have racked over £16m. And as they know where their customers are, mostly in Muslim countries, so they are busy making content purely for the Muslims, in our native languages, using our actors, what have we unleashed on ourselves and our future generations.

This is a disease of the heart, similar to Hypocrisy (Nifaaq), Fa Zada umullah hu marada. Allah has increased the disease in the hearths of those who constantly find this way of finding sexual pleasure through pornography. Psychologist describe this as a disease too. Many of our breatherns who are happily married are addicted to this, they are similar to the People of Loot who even though the halal option was available sought to use evil means, may Allah save everyone who is suffering from this disease.

Kids & Pornography

As my biggest concern is our children, let me share with you a few thoughts in this area: As I do I’m also addressing the children here today including my own 2 boys sitting amongst you.

A vast number of children between 8 – 12 stumble upon wrong websites because of a mis-spelled Google Search, also even with popular words, Disney, Nintendo, FiFA, Call Of Duty, Porn website makers add these words to their keywords, with statements like “FREE FIFA Points”, hence click on them are introduced to these unsuitable websites.

40% of the kids between 8-12 have seen indecent images on the websites, the young kids who are here today, if you have seen something online, my children, firstly ask for forgiveness today, talk to your parents, stay away from friends who are inclined towards these thing and never do it again. And those here that have not had such an experience, children you are the saved blessed children so stay blessed and clean.

London School Economics study found the following very disturbing numbers for the UK’s children:

Average age of first Internet exposure to pornography: 11 years’ old

15-17 year olds having multiple hard-core exposures: 80%

8-16 year olds having viewed porn online: 90%

Nine out of 10 children aged between eight and 16 have viewed pornography on the Internet. In most cases, these sites were accessed unintentionally when a child, often in the process of doing homework, used a seemingly innocent sounding word to search for information or pictures.

The bigger problem now is the use of smart mobile devices, like iPhones, Android Samsung phones, or iPads and Tablets, the access on these devices by kids is unprecedented.

I’m a manager in a PC World store and have been for the last 14 years, about 2 years ago I moved to Bradford Branch, I’ve always been out-spoken with my team and customers to make sure that when they buy any computer, laptop, ipad etc from us that we make sure if it is to be used by a child that is protected. Most white parents ask themselves how to turn on the Kids Safe function on their devices, but in the case of most Muslims parents they haven’t got a clue, and when you suggest to them that your child may use this in-appropriately if not protected, they feel offended.

My advice to save yourself and families from pornography by:

Protect your router with a filter.

Have children’s PC where everyone can see it, not in their bedrooms

Have all the Parental Controls turned up to the highest level

Check Brower history regularly, and if history is missing then you can guess whats happening

Ask your mobile device provider like O2, EE, Vodaphone to turn on the safety features

Talk to the children and discuss with them

Sincerely ask for your sins and abstain.

I know what you are thinking, I don’t know how to. Well what is that PC / Laptop was faulty, your children and your wife will be on your case, telling you to either get a new one or get it fixed, it because a major issue in the house, and you would find some and get it sorted, well if you saw this as being an even bigger problem you would ask the same person to come to your home and protect your family. I urge you to act now.

Predatory Paedophilia, this can be described as where adults find underage boys and girls sexually appealing and are willing to do something to fulfil their vile/ evil desires. In 2011 NSPCC reported 23.097 attacks of paedophilia took place along the length and breadth of this country. In 2014 BBC estimated that 5% of the UK make population was inclined to it, simply put there are about 1m adults within the UK who are Paedophiles, and they find it the easiest way to fulfil their needs via the internet. Please brothers this is a major problem even within the Muslim countries and households, this is the whole reason why we have the perfect concept of Mehram/ Non mahram, can I say that the safest thing with this is not to trust anyone who Islam thinks can be trusted, hence any ghair mahram is a danger for your family whether in the home or internet.

In the same article by the BBC, it was declared that the Pope was recently reported to have said that about 2% of Catholic clergy are paedophiles. Today we see the Catholics being labelled as Phedos, but tomorrow we could be in the same boat, we have had plenty of issues in the masaajid across the UK, we brush these issues under the carpet, but in 20 years when those kids grow up in this country they will point to their abusers, at that time we won’t care about the person, because it will be Islam which will have to stand in the dock, like Christian Catholic religion is today.

My dear brothers in deen, please help us root out this fitna today and don’t brush it under the carpet, and just to bring it home last year we had a similar issue with a teacher in a masjid with a little boy in Wakefield. Don’t think that it’s

happening somewhere else. Be-aware.

Coming back to the issue of Predatory dangers online, this issue generally happens generally on forums, groups, games that are played on the internet with un-known people, my simple advice is that if kids are under 16 don’t let them play these games or join these forums.

A point around Video Games & Video films, the Kufar have established a mechanism by which they rate a movie or a video game like COD, 18,016,015, 12, PG, U. What I see in most of the families is that kids are openly playing these games in from of parents or in hiding. Our standard is much higher that this country, if they think it’s for 18 years’ kids and what sense is it to give it 12 year kids, Do You Not Ponder.

My advice here is that you stick to the ratings of the game the kids are playing.

You discourage that they make any friends online, other than who you know

You join and play with them, even if you think you don’t know what they are doing

Talk to them about these dangers openly and a friend

If we don’t talk to our children in an Islamic context about all these issues who do you think will, the schools, what will they tell them. What they will tell them I can’t even repeat here in this khutbah.

Will their friends talk to them about it? I know I’m asking rhetorical questions deliberately. The point is that there is no one else other than the mothers for the girls and the father for the boys, we must do our duty and act on the ayat of the Quran that said Ko anfasakum.

If you are going to act after this khutbah, then please use hikma and gradually bring a change through consulting and discussing rather than through dictatorial means, because the problem will not go away, it will just hide and get worse.
